North Salinas; Only team coming back with all of their vital parts. This is the year if its going to happen. 2. Notre Dame; Lost Mendella and Costa, but will fiind a way 3. San Benito; I could be completly wrong, but losing your setter and both middles makes me suspicious 4. Salinas; they have the talent, but i dont think they have the heart. Evan Cotton was the heart of this team. 5. Gilroy; They have the talent to be a good team also, but the league is just too deap Santa Cruz 1. Harbor; they are going to have to play well or St Francis will be #1 2. St Francis; They have all the returning talent to be the best, but you have to prove it 3. Madonna; Great season last year, but losing both, all star, outside hitters Monterey Bay 1. Monterey takes the league for sure. Lots of returning players and club players. Should be a very good team 2. N. Monterey; The Twins are gone and so is the setter. will finish 2nd because the league is weak. 3. Monte Vista Christian; graduated everyone 4. Seaside; Wont have the talent Mission Trail 1. King City; Have they ever finished second in league? 2. Santa Catalina; Always put a good team on the floor 3. Carmel; Graduated 7 seniors, but returning some good players 4. Anzar; For a small school they always seem to have talent 5. Pacific Grove; graduated too many good players 6. Stevenson; this is a team that could be good

Harbor - They lost a lot of quality, but also retain 2 of the leagues most dominant players. Middle Blocker Megan Levonian will have a huge year and will only be challenged in the middle by club team mate Katherine Brown (St. Francis) in the middle. For volleyball lovers, you do not want to miss Karissa Cook. Eyes will pop out and floor boards will pop up. The Stanford bound setter is the best setter and best hitter in the SCCAL. Only question is whether or not the second setter has improved enough to allow them to run 6-2. It would be tough to not have the best hitter in the league hitting. Also look for Outside Olivia Ruff. If she keeps her head together, you will see defenders running for cover. Depth will be the Harbor question. New head coach Jan Furman is going to push them to their potential. 2. St.Francis has the most dominant MB for miles around in Katherine Brown. They are scrappy on defense and if they can serve recieve they could challenge Harbor. 3. Aptos will just need to decide which of the 20 girls are going to play. Lots of talent but team cohesion can be tough when you are always afraid to make a mistake and be replaced by one of your hungry team mates. Should be interesting. After the first 3 teams it is downhill fast. Mt. Madonna will have to wait several years to see another Hannah and Alexa and the season will be tough. Kamala Sipin should bring some of her tanacity and will to win to the Soquel girls as their new coach, but the talent level is not near as high as the big 3. Posts: 13 (08/26/08 11:01:10) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	1-North Salinas-Strong finish at the end of last year-Team cohesion will be a test as the daughter of the head coach & AD being the main attraction doesn't always sit well with some 2-Notre Dame-Private school but newer coach-seem to be right there but not quite top of their game 3-Gilroy-Lots of returning players/starters-but do they want it badly enough to get out of 3rd place 4-Hollister-this will be the year they show if they have a strong support system for their program 5-Salinas-Coaching changes, again? Always rough no matter who replaces who or who comes back

Posts: 1 (08/29/08 00:06:25) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Just watched ND take Harbor to 5. 27-25, 25-23, 16-25, 25-27, 15-11. For the first game of the season for ND with two seniors and nine juniors this was a nail biter most of the night. Most hard hit balls from Harbor came up! Cook made the difference with great presence when they needed it in game 5. Afew weeks of expieriance to come togeather and ND may be the team to beat. We'll see. Should have been there. Best first game I've seen yet.

Posts: 2 (08/29/08 12:03:36) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I saw Harbor vs ND as well, and I certainly was not expecting that close of a match. It might take more than 2 players on ND to replace Mendalla and Costa, but it seems like they have a great defensive system. They dug some rockets last night, with many of them careening over the net, but hey they were in. They were determined not to let balls hit the floor and that is the name of the game. Cook bailed out the Pirates as she is capable of doing. You won't see another player in the Monterey Bay that can dominate a game like she can. Harbor serve receive was very poor and that was against a team that was not that aggressive on serve. ND girls put up a heck of a battle and if Harbor does not get their serve receive together (I think Furman and Smith will make them) and get a little quicker on defense, they will lose to the good teams. Harbor seemed to be playing under pressure, whereas ND seemed pretty loose. Expectations are sometimes a burden and they are high for Harbor. ND coach is great and I love his involvement in the game. His girls are playing with a lot of energy and will surprise some good teams who take them for granted.

There were some really good teams. Aptos looks great! They got beat in the Championship match by Presentation of San Jose 17-15 in game three. Aptos has some really big girls at the net that crush, and that Libero digs everything. Notre Dame is solid everywhere, but no superstars, i'm curious who the go to is in a close match. San Benito still has some gas in the tank, all the people that are putting them on the back burner may be in for a shocker, they beat Aptos in pool play.

TCAL - You picked North Salinas#1 but they already lost to San Benito your #3 who in turn lost to your #4 Salinas. Salinas has a talented junior in Sara Reams. Notre Dame has it's own talented junior in All-TCAL player Annie Powers. Salinas at Notre Dame on 11/4 could decide the league title. SCCAL - You didn't even rank Aptos who, as you pointed out later, was the runner up at the ND tournament. They have size and they have one of the best liberos around in All-SCCAL Steffi Sooter, another junior. Harbor does have the best overall player around, Karissa Cook, so I can't really blame you for picking them. MBAY - You may have gotten this one right but so far none of these teams look very good. MTAL - Your #1 pick, King City has already lost to your #3 Carmel. Although young, Carmel looks good. I happened to see them beat San Benito at the ND tournament and was surprised. They may have the best junior of them all in All-County OH Brittany Lombardi. King City's best player is All-MTAL Sophmore Kaitlin Shaug. I haven't seen or heard anything about Santa Catalina this year. At least Catalina will have a senior leading then in All-MTAL Clair Bolton. I give you kudos for putting it out there early in the season. I'd like to hear your predictions so far, after the first few weeks of play. It is hard to pick any league this year. The SCCL is the toughest league, The TCAL will be the tighest race between N. Salinas, Notre Dame, Salinas and San Benito, and I still say this will be the most fun league to watch. The MTAL looks like its going to be between Carmel and Santa Catalina. But not far behind playing the spoiler role will be King City and Anzar. I'm betting one of them ruins the dream of either Carmel or Santa Catalina. I wish i would have gone to the Monterey at Catalina game, but i figured Catalina would handle them easily. I heard that Catalina lost an OH to an ankle injury vs N. Salinas the night before. My crystal ball will tell me more after tonights matchups and saturdays tournament.

They appear to be the most consistent team and I keep hearing about this exchange student that can really play on the outside. Then i think its a battle for 2nd between N. Salinas, Salinas and Benito with all three having a good shot at it. I still pick Harbor to win the SCCAL. They have the coaching and the players. I have yet to see St Francis play, but from years past and what other people have told me they are better than Aptos. But I say Aptos finishes 2nd. The MTAL looks the cloudiest to me. Carmel has the best record, but hasnt won any meaningful games. Catalina and K. City are always good. I'll go with John Devine on this one and choose Catalina and the experience. Monterey is still the pick in the MBL. N. Monterey 2nd and a Seaside in third but way better than they were the last couple of years.

If salinas wants a shot at winning T-cal rhimes will have to play to her full potential. She is the deciding factor for her team. ND is very good as well however like you said above no superstars. San Benito is weak i do not believe they have a chance at winning t-cal. It will be down to the 2 teams down the street from each other Salinas and ND
