Not a high talent level overall, so the league might be competitive. Aptos has the most experience and decent talent, but hasn't shown the killer instinct
to expect they will run away with league. SC, SLV and SF should all challenge, all have talented players but none that has shown he will dominate a game. Any
of them might decide to suprise us. Harbor lost a chunk from last year's team, and the younger Gruber will need to be a big scorer for them to stay
competitive. SV will again be challenged; but if incoming freshman Josh Mooney makes varsity, expect some excitement.

Aptos is loaded and should easily win the SCCAL..the only question is how will they play all the guys they have. They might come in 1st and 3rd if they
divided up their team into 2 squads.
Santa Cruz will be good and Harbor will be better than people think with young Gruber lighting things up Soquel will be OK St. Francis will finally be competitive--at least with SLV and SV and maybe even more. The MBL looks like a have and have not league Seaside should win with Pajaro Valley right on their heels Monterey could be in the mix as well NMC will be down but not as far down as Watsonville and Monte Vista. Are there any summer leagues going on? How are these teams doing? Team camps? |

slv will be terrible with only 3 returning players from their varsity team last year
soquel wont be that much better with no size whatsoever and all of their scoring gone from last year. no possibly promising players who could have a breakout year. no felipe mendez to play zero defense and score 25 points per game from cherrypicking scotts valley...will they ever be good? their brightest point this year will be josh mooney the freshman but...well hes a freshman and hes maybe 5'6 harbor lost two 6'6 kids and quinn gruber their best player but they do have colin gruber who should be the best player on their team but i dont know how much he can carry a team as a sophomore. dont really know of any other player on their team ..... st francis will be solid with three juniors who started last year on varsity....scurich, lucas, gomez, and maybe little freshman (now sophomore) saucedo. call me crazy but i see aptos and santa cruz as equal and the only team either of them would lose to is each other. aptos has a senior full roster with the big 3 being johnston rocha and ingram. santa cruz has 3rd year varsity point guard sean conroe as the only senior who will have an impact. but they had 3 sophomores and 1 freshman on varsity last year who should start this year if their coach doesnt screw that up. i think a big surprise that could put santa cruz over aptos is sophomore maki. played on varsity last year and played well in limited time i see him as on the same level as fellow sophomore colin gruber. Aptos 11-1 SC 11-1????? |

gatorade0 You're not crazy at all, you're right on... yeah, Santa Cruz and Aptos will probably be leading the league this season. If only the SCHS
Coach can handle the job... and the Sophomore boy's name is Zen. The Junior, Taylor Kientzel~ we can look forward to watching him too. ok other teams SV
great coach but not enough talent yet...but will see~ I saw josh mooney ...first ...he needs more power...and experience? they have 6'6? boy? will be
changing nice audience and support, that is big help. SLV tough team ... but season is long .... st francis getting better ...will be solid ...watch out for
them.... Soquel....yaa lost key players...but will be changing ...shane is back ...he has height 6'4 . could make 3-point and inside play...and chris
rodriguez is good too. Harbor lost key players too...but young sophomore Colin and 6'6 Mitch and ...? will be interesting ...not so bad.. Aptos ...well
definitely be good- big 3 and nice team chemistry ...so they're not worried so much ....they want to win ccs and more....just worried about injuries and
pressure? exciting season for them... So Santa Cruz will be making something. everybody thinking about Aptos . sean conroe will be leading schs, and taylor
kientzel will be dunking and finishers and zen maki will make happenings ...big boys have to be stepping up. will see the season ...every player- take care not
to get injuries, work hard , and a key is defense... gatorade0 are you a reporter or what? you know your stuff!!

Charles should start the sophmore zen over sean. Zen knows how to play point unlike conroe, who shoots way to much for an awful percentage and turns the ball
over like crazy. The two worst characteristics for a point guard, one fancy behind the back or no look pass doesnt make up for the 3 turnovers before that. 2
points is 2 points. Maki is extremely talented and handles the ball well. Move Conroe to shooting guard mayb so the balls not in his hand in the last 5 minutes
of the game

Regardless of who plays point guard for SC, they should win league without much struggle.

As for Soquel, yeah, very difficult year ahead. There is no Chris Rodriguez there. There's a junior, Chris Roberto. My call is Aptos #1, St. Francis #2 (yes, St. Francis), and Santa Cruz #3. And the following year St. Francis takes it all, with everyone returning.

AboveTheElbows wrote:I'll give St Francis as high as 3rd, but no way #2. Gomez, Lucas, Scurich are all good athletes (football, basketball, baseball) but not necessarily "basketball players". Whereas aptos and santa cruz's starting lineups are filled with 1 sport athletes who specialize in basketball. Scott Scurich will not have an impact. And the addition of Perryman who has yet to play a minute of varsity basketball will not push St. Francis past Aptos or Santa Cruz. sorry |

They played AAU ball 3 years running ('05, '06, 07) and wiped out most everything in their path. Gomez will not be the scoring threat he's been in years past but he's smart and can distribute as well as any point in the league. I guess I think St. Francis will be better than you do, and I don't think Santa Cruz will be as good as you do. Santa Cruz will not have the chemistry and familiarity of either Aptos or St. Francis. No argument from me regarding Aptos, who has still got to be the favorite for #1. Those guys have been together for literally years now, and they tied with Soquel for first last year. |

AboveTheElbows wrote: Yes. I guess we'll have to see which team is better once they actually start the season... But the reason I have Santa Cruz over St Francis is simply the match ups at each position. I think Santa Cruz has better players at each position except for the 4. And the 5 is up for grabs because I don't know Scott Scurich's abilities. Sean Conroe > Curtis Gomez Zen Maki > Chad Lucas Taylor Kientzel > Shane Perryman Matt Hopkins < Zach Scurich Ian Hoppis ???? Scott Scurich This is how I see it. Obviously you see it differently and that is respectable but I think it will be Aptos and Santa Cruz battling for 1st and 2nd and St Francis will be pretty much a lock for 3rd. After those 3 teams there is a huge drop off in talent with the other 4 teams in the league. |

gatorade0 wrote:Scott Scurich will rip Matty Hopkins a new one. Ian is tough, but he's all they have against Scotty, Ti, and Zach. Too tough. Ian is tough, but Scott Scurich is better in every category - seriously. And if you add the muscle provided by Ti Sambrillo, - it gets very tough for Ian. Matt will not be a factor in that matchup. St. Francis should easily dominate SC in the paint. If they don't wage war there, they're stupid. They have size and braun and SC has no answer for them in the paint. Taylor and Zen can play on the fringes, but they will not get paint opportunities. And I think Lucas, Gomez, and Saucedo are good enough defensivesly to neutralize their forte. I agree, SC has an advantage outside the paint, but St. Francis rules the paint and rebounding, etc. The reality is that Taylor, for all his offensive gifts, is not tough or big. St. Francis will beat him up. Frankly, they'll beat up on everyone up except Aptos, who knows how to deal with the physical game.... Of course, I could be all BS too.... |

Let them play first | #14 | ||

Aptos is easy #1 and should win the league without much challenge. They have the talent and depth.
I'll put Santa Cruz #2 because of talent and experience. Conroe and Kientzel are the difference. _________________________________________________________________________________________ Then comes the next group of #3-5 Harbor has young talent and Gruber will be one of the best players in the league this year as a soph. He will win a couple of games by himself when he gets on a roll and they have some size inside. Coach Gruber does a good job year in and year out. St. Francis will be much better and not be an easy win for the upper half of the league but they are relying on 3 juniors (Z Scurich, C Gomez, and C Lucas) and 3 guys that have not played ONE second of varsity basketball (S Perryman, S Scurich, T Sambrailo). They will also have a senior and a couple of sophomores to help out as well. They will have better depth and they are definitely better than they have been and they have been getting better every year as their kids get older. Before we put them up with Aptos and SC, let's see how all of these guys do at the varsity level. Also, let's see if they all survive football without injury.....S. Scurich already hurt his knee. Walters may be the best coach in the league so never underestimate Soquel. They still can shoot, press, and cause problems for teams. #6-7 will probably end up being SLV and Scotts Valley. Scotts Valley is improving as well and may suprise but it's hard to rank them above the others. SLV seems like it might be on a little bit of a downslope but maybe their coaching change will be positive for them. Who knows.....let them play a few games and we'll have a better idea. |

I got a message Fri night......Sitting on the bench during 2nd half of the SLV/SF football game.....
Lucas=broken leg and out for year Scott Scurich still out with knee injury Zach Scurich injured foot and hand Curtis Gomez injured knee Ty Sambrailo injured ankle Does St. Francis have anybody that is not injured? Look at the roster on mbay....everybody plays football. At their football game, they said that SF won't even be able to start practice until the football playoffs are done. Perriman is the only guy that doesn't play football. The football team is having a great year but the injuries could really hurt the basketball season....especially early on because they can't even practice until Nov 24. |

Yeah, it's not looking too good for them any more this year. So I see it as Aptos #1, SC #2, Harbor#3, then everyone else. The Harbor/SC matchups
could be fun to watch....

Whoops, Scurich's and Gomez are back, and Perryman is lighting them up as I predicted, so St. Francis is going to be tough. They beat PV who spanked a few
SCCAL teams already. And what a great game last night between SC and Harbor!
