The referees handed that game to Harbor. Harbor shot 25 free throws while SC shot 10. One ref in particular seemed to almost have a personal problem with the
Santa Cruz team and he called the majority of the ridiculous fouls. The game should have never been that close.

FT disparity | #23 | ||
|
FT disparity is used as a crutch way too often when criticizing officials. It says nothing about how the game was called. The team that attacks the basket
more will usually go to the line more often. The team that plays better fundamental defense will foul less often. And the team that chirps at the refs will
get fewer calls. I don't know how the game was played, but I can say that SC has had a problem with the last one going back to Pistol's last couple
years.

After playing a few games, things look different.
Aptos is still loaded and has to be a huge favorite. They have way too much offense for anybody else with 3-5 guys that can and should go off every night. Harbor looks much better than expected and should battle the Cards for 2nd/3rd place. Gruber is doing a great job. Cards have talent....can they get it together. St. Francis is better but their schedule has been soft. A good win over Pajaro Valley might be a sign but we'll see. They are still young and way behind with late start and injuries. Soquel will improve and should battle for the 3rd-5th slot. SLV and Scotts Valley are probably at the bottom but Moody could get SV a win or two if somebody doesn't watch out. Should be a fun year with lots of games that could go either way on a given night. |

Harbor was a pleasant surprise. They will be tough but that's offset by the fact that they're only about 6 deep. Get Mitch into foul trouble and they
will struggle. Soquel is vulnerable to both SLV and Scotts Valley. For Soquel so far it's all about the 3 (hot or cold) and they haven't shown that
they can reliably score in the paint either in the post or on the drive. So far they're all drive-and-dish, and they are not showing the skills to pull
that off on a consistent basis. Their 3 shooters either score 17-18 points or 1-2. They also have a couple of guys who don't look too eager to play defense
or box out. Scotts Valley has size and I think Tony Lopez will bring those guys along to be a lot better than they are right now. SC is weaker without Hoppis
(out for the season), but I think they will figure out how to beat Harbor during the regular season. I think SC-Harbor-St. Francis are going to be great
matchups, as will Soquel-Scotts Valley-SLV. Nobody in the first group will lose to anyone in the second.

Now that the SCCAL has started... | #26

Any thoughts on where the SCCAL is headed? Aptos still looks to be a runaway league champ. Harbor has jumped to #2 with a pounding of St. Francis and Gruber lighting things up; better hope they stay healthy Santa Cruz is 3rd and can win any game by 20 or lose any game by 20--could finish 2nd or 4th St. Francis is 4th--barely--looked lost in first league game and may not be ready--injuries to Lucas, Sambrailo, and Scurich haven't helped Scotts Valley is 5th--good win over Soquel and could easily move up to 4th. Soquel and SLV |

1. Aptos 12-0
2. Harbor 10-2 3. Santa Cruz 7-5 4. St. Francis 6-6 5. Scotts Valley 5-7 6. SLV 2-10 7. Soquel 0-12 The edge goes to Santa Cruz over St. Francis because Sambrailo will be missed in the paint, while Hopkins and Hoppis (6' 5", 6' 6") who missed most of the pre-season are back in SC's lineup to impede Scott Scurich, who could do nothing to Harbor against another big. Harbor assigned Kersey to Perryman and he held Perryman to one 3 point basket. Santa Cruz will do something similar. Poor Soquel lost 2 starters to injury, having to bring up 2 J.V. guys and they were iffy before that. It's possible but not likely that they could steal one from either SLV or Scotts Valley. Scotts Valley continues to improve. |

Who did Soquel lose to injury? For the year? Never like to see kids hurt.

08-09 SCCAL halfway | #30
|
There have been a lot of good posts but now that we are just past the halfway point of SCCAL play, where do things stand now. Teams are listed in current
order.
1. Aptos....not even close...the best team in the league by far. The odds are very low they will even lose a game but the definitely won't lose 2 games so they are a lock for the regular season title. 12-0 2. (tie) Harbor--They have played very well and Gruber has been awesome and Postle has been very good. Depth is a concern and St. Francis pounded them when Mitch foulded out last night to split the series. Games with Aptos and Santa Cruz will determine their final spot but 2nd place and a 9-3 record. 2. (tie) St. Francis--They have been pretty good after getting hammered by Harbor to start off league play....they are getting healthy and some time together has helped. Game at Santa Cruz will be deciding factor but 3rd place and 8-4. A great job for such a young program. 4. Scotts Valley--They have been much better than predicted with the Labahn kid and Mooney leading the way. A big win over Santa Cruz earlier jumped them to 4th. Final spot 5th place at 5-7. 5. Santa Cruz--Thought they would contend for the title but they just haven't come together. Injuries haven't helped. Lost to all 3 of the top teams and then fell to Scotts Valley. A 2-4 start will be hard to overcome. Must beat St. Francis and Harbor in 2nd half and not slip up again. Final spot 4th place with 6-6 record and a strong 2nd half. 6. SLV--Really struggles to score and just doesn't have the horses. They really play hard and could beat somebody in the 2nd half they shouldn't. 2-10 and 6th place 7. Soquel--Walters just doesn't have much talent with the injuries they have suffered. A long year for last season's co-champs |

Congratulations to Aptos....SCCAL Champions | #33
|
Now that the regular season is over what do people think based on the preseason (and midseason) predictions. I know the league tournament is still to be played but I tend to put more weight on the 12 game balanced schedule than the 3 day league tournament. 1. Aptos...11-1....predicted to be #1 and didn't disappoint. They had the most talent in the league by far and the only surprise was that they lost a game. Great season and should be congratulated. Rocha (could be league MVP) and Johnston were almost unstopable and they got contributions from lots of guys. Ingram was solid and Soph. Hinga stepped in and did a great job at point playing with all of the veterans. Definitely a senior led team and they showed it. Lots of big wins this year. They should win the tournament and make a run in the CCS....maybe even win the CCS. 2. St. Francis....10-2...a shocker at the #2 spot. Most had them at #4, some at #5, and maybe a rare few as high as #3 but to go 10-2 in league and finish in 2nd place has to be considered a big upset. (Probably as big an upset as their football team finishing 2nd) With a win over Aptos and a 9 game league winning streak, the Sharks had a great year....maybe the best year of any team in league. I saw them play a few times and each time it was somebody different leading the way. Remember they are just in year four and they started the season with no starters that had ever played a SCCAL game before. They could win a game or two in the CCS. 3. Harbor....9-3...Gruber was great and you could argue that he is the MVP and Postle is the most improved player in the league and definitely an all
league player. Those two were great and the rest of the team did their roles very well. They could easily win the SCCAL tournament as they have both the
talent and the coaching to go on a run. They have already blown out St. Francis and Gruber can get hot at any time and pull out a couple of wins all by
himself. They could get a CCS win and maybe two.
