I was cruising home yesterday afternoon when I saw Monterey High practicing and thought I'd check things out. I'm glad that it's baseball season again.
But I heard some news that disappointed me. I heard the Gold Glove game between Monterey and Carmel won't be taking place this year. I was hoping to get the perspective from some of the people associated with Carmel as to why the game has been canceled.
The game is something that is special to me for a few reasons. First of all, the actual glove on the trophy belonged to a Carmel High alumni - John Lucido. He was a member of the 1979 Carmel team that won the CCS championship. At this time, there was only one division, so Carmel was competing against much larger schools. John went on to play at Hartnell followed by a few years in the New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants minor league systems. After his playing days were over he spent countless hours with the peninsula's youth coaching kids from all over the area. All this is important to me because John Lucido was my uncle and passed away in a car accident in 1992. Secondly, I am a Monterey High alum, and love to see the rivalry continue. Carmel beat two of the MHS teams I played on in CCS championship games. And lastly, I think this is a great event. This game raises money for both programs and allows two of the best programs in the area to compete against each other.
