you're kidding right???!!! Give me a break - why do we have to accept cussing at all? it's distracting, inappropriate - the fans are a mixed group
including kids AND the players are kids too, don't forget. If a coach needs to cuss at a player to motivate them, there is something wrong.

Believe it or not, the coach is supposed to be a role model for these kids, not another kid. The best high school coach I have known was a friend of mine in
Texas. Not only did he not swear, if his player swore at practice, in a game, or off the court and he heard them they would not play the next game. You would
be surprised at how good they became with the English language and actually learned how to talk by using words that made them sound much more intelligent. And
by the way, the kids loved and respected this coach, as well as always having winning seasons. I would pretty much take it for granted that a coach who swears
a good deal simply just does not know how to communicate with his players and therefor resorts to cussing, thinking (hoping) that it has some positive
influence on their play or motivation. I doubt very much that it enhances either.

But most of the kids are already formed and if cussing at a sport practice influences them there is somthing wrong and where you really need to look is the
family life.. some of the of ethe best coaches may not cuss but i can almost asure you that they all do when no one is looking. i have been playing sports
since i was a 8 and it has been aroung forever and 90% of the kids have not been influenced.

Unfortunately, by the time a kid gets to high school it is a little late to deal with his family. And, by the way, this coach I was talking about did not swear
away from the court either. He just felt (got it from dad) that you swore if you did not know how to use standard English to communicate.
Hey, the swearing thing is all just a bunch of macho crap anyway. All people can learn what is appropriate at about any time of life. Ever heard of the type of guy who says inappropriate things to woman, then all of sudden his superiors at work tell him he will be fired if he doesn't can it? He would usually just stop, right, unless of course he is a complete idiot. Behavior can be changed by the threat of taking away something important, i.e. hoops, job, etc. These kids are just having to deal with an MTV world and so they tend to incorporate things they think are supposed to be cool. Coaches have a huge influence on kids and I would not let my kid play for a fool. The coach first mentioned in this thread is one. |
