"For the first time in 17 years the Central Coast Section will increase the number of teams and divisions for high school football playoffs.
The CCS Board of Managers voted last week to up the number of playoffs teams from 32 to 40 and divisions from four to five.
The number of teams in each division remains unchanged at eight.
The Open Division remains the same teams either choose to compete in what is regarded as the toughest division in the section, or are placed there by a point system based on strength of schedule.
Teams will be placed in the other four divisions by enrollment.
"A lot of coaches were concerned about the smaller schools and the first-round scores," CCS commissioner Nancy Lazenby-Blaser said. "They were concerned for the safety of the players, and wanted to come up with a way to make it safer."According to the CCS website, had the five division scheme been in place in 2008, this is what the play-offs would have looked like.
